Description
The Gala Burial Aisle, located on Church Street in Galashiels, dates back to 1636 and has undergone later alterations. It is a small rectangular building with a gabled roof. The gables feature pointed arched plate tracery windows, while the west side has a semi-circular arched doorway with imposts. The roof is steeply pitched, and there is a moulded eaves course that extends around the gables, creating hoodmoulds over the arched windows. The structure is built of finely sized random rubble, with irregular red sandstone quoins and margins, stone skews, and metal grilles on the open windows. The door is boarded and has bolt heads.
Surrounding the burial aisle is a graveyard with boundary walls and gates. To the south, there is a coped rubble wall with raised sections that incorporate tombstones. Decorative cast-iron gates are located to the southeast, and there are railings along the northern boundary on a retaining wall. The graveyard contains predominantly 18th and 19th century gravestones, with some dating back to 1600.
