Description
Former St Peter's Hall, located at 10 Abbotsford Road, was designed by Hay and Henderson in 1889. This two-storey, five-bay building has a symmetrical rectangular plan and was originally a church hall, now serving as the Air Cadet Training Corps since 2006. The site slopes steeply to the south. The central bays are slightly raised, featuring a canted bracketed timber window flanked by bipartite arched windows above three deep-set arches, which are now in-filled. A prominent pyramidal ventilator is also present. The exterior is constructed of coursed random whinstone rubble with rough whin quoins and smooth dressed rounded red sandstone dressings. The ground floor is angled, with a bullnosed string course and plain timber boxed eaves. There is a small integral brick outhouse to the southwest and a later timber canopied brick and concrete entrance plinth leading to the upper hall on the west side.
The building predominantly features timber sash and case windows, with Georgian wired glass on the ground floor. The roofs are polygonal piended with graduated thick slate, and there is a slated pyramidal ventilator at the ridge in the center, along with scalloped clay ridge tiles. The rainwater goods are cast iron, and the gutters are recessed behind the string course. A tapered rubble eaves stack is also present.
Inside, the original layout on the ground floor includes a small drill hall, services, and general offices, complete with small tiled fireplaces and four-panel doors. The main hall on the upper floor has been subdivided with later 20th-century timber partitions and a suspended ceiling, but the original intricately arched beamed roof structure and stage remain clearly visible both above and below the partitions.
The property is enclosed by stone coped boundary walls to the north and west, with railings to the east that belong to the church sharing the grounds.
