Description
Gerard Hall, located on Church Street in Monifieth, Dundee, was designed by Charles Edward and Thomas Robertson in 1882, with James Gentle of Dundee as the mason. This single-storey church hall has a rectangular plan and features a north aisle and an additional eastern wing in a Gothic style. The exterior is constructed of stugged snecked ashlar with polished dressings. It includes lancet windows under a continuous hoodmould, with diamond leaded glazing throughout. The roof is slate with terracotta ridge tiles, and there is a square-plan, louvred timber fleche.
On the west elevation, there is an off-set gabled porch with a harled addition to the north. The entrance features a shouldered arch door with a sculpted and inscribed tympanum in a pointed arch, along with a simple rose window above at gallery level, which is also present on the east elevation. The south elevation has eight bays with a base and string course, lancet windows, a wallhead cornice, and cast-iron rainwater goods with a triangular indent pattern, scalloped hoppers, and decorative brackets. The north elevation is similar, but the window heads are gabled. There is a simple connecting section to the eastern wing, which includes a three-light sash and case window with a herringbone pattern tympanum recessed in a chamfered pointed arch on the south gable.
Inside, the north aisle is formed by an arcade of four pointed arches on octagonal piers, each with robustly cut capitals featuring differing foliate patterns. The ceiling is lowered, but braces and beams remain visible.
