Description
Invertay Primary School and School House, located on Maule Street in Monifieth, was designed by David MacLaren in 1878, with significant additions made to the southern and central parts by James Munro in 1906, and two detached classrooms added in 1913. This Jacobean-style school features a combination of one and two-storey structures arranged in an H-plan.
The northern range is a single-storey L-plan with a long, irregularly-bayed front. It has shaped gables adorned with Jacobean ornamentation and oculi, as well as single bi- and tripartite windows, all featuring angled lintels and a multi-pane glazing pattern, most of which are top-hopper windows. Relieving arches are present in the principal gables above the tripartite windows. This section connects to the southern range with a two-storey piended roof that includes flanking gabled stairwells, featuring similar bipartite fenestration and tripartite Art Nouveau coloured glass in the stairwells.
The southern range is a symmetrical two-storey structure with five bays, where the outer bays are slightly advanced. The angles are rounded at the ground level and square at the first floor, with cill courses and a string course, topped by a corbelled wallhead cornice. The fenestration and details are consistent with those of the northern range.
The School House, built in 1878, is a two-storey L-plan structure that mirrors the Jacobean detailing of the school. It features four-pane sash and case windows with chamfered angles, rounded long and short quoins, a cill course at the first floor, and a wallhead cornice. Decorative cast-iron rainwater pipes with brackets and strapwork motifs at the hoppers are present, along with gables that have corniced stacks on the east and west sides.
