Description

Wick High School, built in 1909 by D and J R McMillan, features later additions and alterations by Sinclair MacDonald and Son from 1935 to 1937. This symmetrical, two-storey, six-bay school has a rectangular plan and multiple gables, showcasing Tudor and Scottish Domestic architectural styles. The building has crowstepped gables with arrowhead coping stones and is constructed from coursed squared sandstone rubble with raised pale sandstone ashlar dressings, along with a rusticated base course. There is a long L-plan addition to the northwest that uses similar materials and design, as well as later additions at the rear.

The principal elevation faces northeast and is set back from the road, accessed by a broad flight of steps. At the center, there is a single-storey double gable featuring a pair of Venetian windows, flanked by entrances for pupils. The outer bays have two-storey gable-end wings topped with ball finials at the corners. Castellated, octagonal towers are located within the re-entrant angles, and there is a further double crowstepped gable above the central drill hall, which is flanked by taller gables that have bracketed stacks.

Inside, the school has a simple drill hall at the center with a cantilevered balcony on three sides. The main spaces and stairs feature curved moulded timber panelling that rises to dado height. The stairs and balconies have moulded cast-iron banisters with timber handrails. The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, and the roof is covered with grey slate. The gable head is made of sandstone ashlar, and there are some ridge stacks along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
