Description
The Carnegie Public Library, located on Sinclair Terrace in Wick, was designed by Leadbetter & Fairley and built between 1895 and 1898. The building features an ashlar canted frontage, with harled walls and raised ashlar dressings elsewhere. It stands two storeys high and has five bays facing Sinclair Terrace, along with a wide single bay on Cliff Road that includes two ground floor windows.
At the canted angle, there is a projecting semi-circular porch supported by polished granite columns, with Venetian windows above. A semi-octagonal stair turret projects towards Cliff Road. The tall hall window on Sinclair Terrace has a Gibbs surround and is adorned with plate glass art nouveau glazing. The first floor features two-light windows with segmental pediments, one facing Cliff Road and two facing Sinclair Terrace.
The north elevation includes a two-storey projecting canted bay, and clasping pilasters are present at the outer angles. The building is topped with a modillioned cornice and a red tile roof, which features a small octagonal cupola with a leaded bell-cast roof. Inside, there is an irregular hexagonal entrance hall with a curved flight of stairs leading to a first floor balcony or landing.
