Description
4 Hill Street in Monifieth is an earlier 19th-century cottage that was embellished and extended in the mid to later 19th century. It is a single-storey and attic structure with an irregular four-bay design, featuring classical detailing. The exterior is made of squared, snecked rubble, with the rear rendered and a slate roof. The windows are mainly two-pane sash and case.
On the south elevation, there is a central doorpiece adorned with a cornice and a crowning anthemion, along with a richly ornamented architrave and consoles. Flanking the door are low projecting balustrades. To the left, there is a canted window and dormer that features a floral diaper work frieze, while to the right is a single window with a dentil cornice and antefixae, and an architrave decorated with patera ornament, with a canted dormer above. The eaves band also has patera detailing, and there is a later box dormer above the door, along with corniced ridge stacks and an additional stack at the southeast angle. There is an additional later bay to the west, which has a similarly richly architraved and corniced single window.
The west elevation features a skew gable with an anthemion apex finial and a central window that is an eight-pane sash and case, detailed similarly to the south front.
The east elevation is rendered and lined, with a skewed chimney gable.
The Maule Street gatepiers are octagonal with squat bulbous caps, moulded with ball finials. They are flanked by a wall with post-World War II wrought-iron railings that curve to the east. There are two flights of steps with a balustrade leading to the garden, along with cast-iron urns and lamp standards.
