Description

Seaview is a large, irregular, 6-bay Jacobean villa dated 1860 and with 3 bays added slightly later. The house is built of pink coursed and snecked rubble with buff dressings, and has a slate roof.

The south elevation originally comprised three bays, with irregular, projecting gables. A canted bay with decorative cornice is situated at ground floor level to the left, with a heraldic panel to the right. A bipartite window now occupies the centre where a door originally stood. A string course runs along the first floor level, and the gables feature bipartites with stepped hoodmoulds and label stops, with a central single window. The roof has coped skews with kneelers and gablet skewputts, and a shouldered stack on the return wall. The west two-pane sash and case windows are original. To the right of the original three-bay section is a later three-bay addition, also irregular in design and with similar glazing. An advanced western gable mirrors the original, and includes an attic window. A three-stage entrance tower is located on the right side, featuring an advanced porch with a balustraded cornice, an angled-headed door with a keystone, and a pedimented first-floor window. A small window and door, both with sculpted cornices, lead to a balustraded balcony at the upper stage, topped with a pyramidal roof and a weathervane finial. The string course and skews match those of the original house.

The west elevation is irregular, with four bays and a slightly advanced chimney bay. A square projecting tripartite window is set into the ground floor, with a shaped cornice, and an elaborate corbelled stack with linked shafted chimneys.

The east elevation has a gable set to the left featuring an advanced corniced stack with set-offs and shafted chimneys. An abutting service wing has 12-pane sash and case windows and a central corniced stack.

The south elevation presents four irregular gable projections, a single-storey addition, and remains largely unaltered. Gable and wallhead stacks are present, along with dormers, and irregular fenestration with a mixed glazing pattern.

A cast-iron balustrade with bulbous balusters and angle urns runs along the south side, set on a coursed rubble terrace wall. A curtain wall to the east includes a hand pump. An enclosing wall surrounds the south, east and west boundaries, with five square gate piers at the south side. These piers have vermiculated bases, polished shafts and moulded caps, three of which are topped with cast-iron ball finials.

The interior features deeply moulded ceiling and cornice plasterwork in the ground floor principal rooms and hall. The drawingroom has a double-columned timber chimneypiece (with the overmantle stored in the basement), and the principal bedroom above has private stairs to a nursery and a tower smoking room. Initials “J F L” appear on the cloakroom chimneypiece. The attic bathroom contains a tongue and groove panelled bath with a marble surround.
