Description

James MacLaren, dated 1860. 3 W bays slightly later. 2-storey and attic, 6-bay, irregular plan large Jacobean villa. Pink coursed and snecked rubble with buff dressings; slate roof.

S ELEVATION: original 3-bay house to right; irregular, outer gables advanced, canted bay with decorative cornice at ground floor left, heraldic panel at right, central bipartite window replacing original door; string course at 1st floor, bipartites with stepped hoodmoulds and label stops at gables, single window at centre; coped skews with kneelers and gablet skewputts, shouldered stack on return wall of bay at W 2-pane sash and case glazing.

Later 3-bay addition: irregular, similar glazing, advanced W gable corresponding to original, but with attic window: 3-stage entrance tower at right, advanced porch with balustraded cornice, door with angled head and keystone, pedimented 1st floor window; small window and door with sculpted cornices at upper stage leading to balustraded balcony; pyramidal roof with weathervane finial. String course and skews similar to original house.

W ELEVATION: irregular 4-bay, with slightly advanced chimney bay, square projecting tripartite and shaped cornice to ground floor; corbelled stack with linked shafted chimneys.

E ELEVATION: gable at left with advanced corniced stack (with set-offs) and shafted chimneys. Service wing abutting with 12-pane sash and case windows, central corniced stack.

S ELEVATION: 4 irregular gable projections with 1 single storey addition, largely unaltered; gable and wallhead stacks; dormers; irregular fenestration with mixed glazing pattern.

TERRACE BALUSTRADE: cast-iron bulbous balusters with angle urns set on coursed rubble terrace wall to S.

Curtain wall to E with hand pump.

Enclosing wall to S, E and W, 5 square plan gate piers at S with vermiculated base, polished shafts and moulded caps, 3 with cast-iron ball finials.

INTERIOR: deeply moulded ceiling and cornice plasterwork in ground floor principal rooms and hall. Double columned timber chimneypiece in drawingroom at W (overmantle stored in basement); principal bedroom above with private stairs to nursery and tower smoking room. Initials J F L on cloakroom chimneypiece. Bathroom in attic with tongue and groove panelled bath with marble surround.
