Camphill House, 50 Camphill Road, Broughty Ferry, Dundee

Camphill House is a large, irregular-plan villa of Jacobean style, dated 1852 and designed by James MacLaren. Later service additions were made to the northwest side. The house is two storeys and an attic, with single-storey projections. It is constructed of skimmed and painted ashlar, with snecked stone at the rear, and has a slate roof. The windows are mainly sash and case windows with 2, 4, and 8 panes, and cavetto-moulded architraves. A string course runs along the south and east elevations at the first floor level, and an eaves course is present on the south elevation. Tall, grouped, moulded and coped stacks are a prominent feature, alongside gables with kneelers, skewputts, and moulded saddleback copings.

On the south elevation, a slightly advanced, flat-roofed entrance porch is positioned off-centre to the left, featuring basket arches to the south and west. A moulded blocking course displays an armorial bearing with the inscription 'nil desperandum, CJN, 1852'. A fretted balustrade is located to the west. An advanced bay is present to the right; it features a full-height, 5-light window with mullions and a bracketed window-guard with iron railings on the first floor. A parapet tops this bay, alongside a shaped gable with an urn finial and a small segmental attic window with a hoodmould. Three symmetrical bays are set back to the right; the central gabled bay has bipartites, with a window-guard at the first floor mirroring the detailing on the left. Ornament and a ball finial adorn the gablehead, while the flanking bays contain windows on both the ground and first floors. Two modern rooflights are also visible.

A single-storey former conservatory is set back far to the left, showcasing a five-shoulder-arched arcade, with two of the arches blocked and the remaining three converted into 2-pane windows. The arcade is supported by four strapwork corbels carrying a moulded cornice with small urn-bearing dies and iron railings, with an angle pier on the left. A blind triple arcade with similar cornice treatment is found on the left return elevation.

The east elevation displays a decorative panel with lion and tree motifs on the first floor left, and a window at the gable. A lower, flat-roofed, two-storey bay is set back to the right, containing a door with a keystoned round-arched door panel and windows on both the ground and first floors.

The west elevation features single and two-storey additions on the left side, with the original gable set back to the centre, displaying a bipartite window, a small attic window, and a corbelled stack. A tripartite window is located at the bay to the right.

On the north elevation, a round-headed window with voussoirs is present, alongside later additions on the left and right sides.

The interior includes a rib-moulded coomb plaster ceiling in the former ground floor dining room, the first-floor drawing room, and the staircase, along with decorative cornices and consoles throughout. There is a well stair with carved balusters and a lincrusta dado, and a round-headed window with Gothic niches. A marble chimneypiece is found in the drawing room.
