Description

6 Abbotsford Road is a former school building dating from 1859, designed in a plain gothic style. It is a single-storey, 4-bay structure in an L-plan layout, with an attached 2-storey, 2-bay schoolhouse to the east, which has been used as offices since 2006. At the rear, there are lower ancillary ranges that form a U-plan courtyard.

The exterior features shouldered arched windows with plain circular recessed stone plaques above them. The roof is steep-pitched with multiple gables and overhanging boarded timber eaves. The building is constructed of coursed rubble whinstone, with stugged and smoothed blonde sandstone quoins and chamfered surrounds. The windows include bronze fixed multi-pane casements with ventilators and 8-pane timber sash and case windows in the schoolhouse. The doors are 20th-century glazed timber. The roofs are pitched with slate, and there are corniced shouldered ashlar stacks with circular clay cans, along with a mixture of cast-iron and plastic rainwater goods.

Inside, the main school area has been remodeled to create office spaces. However, the interior of the schoolhouse retains its original layout and features, including shutters, panelled doors, and a simple turned stair.

The boundary wall and railings consist of whinstone rubble with rounded copes surrounding the former playground to the south, east, and west. There are also cast-iron railings with decorative corner posts enclosing the yard that faces the street.
