Description
St Peter's Episcopal Church, located on Abbotsford Road in Galashiels, was built in 1853 by John Henderson, with the chancel and south aisle added by George Henderson in 1881. This simple, oblong church is designed in the Early English style and features a projecting gabled entrance porch and a long chancel, along with an aisle and vestry on the south side. The building is constructed of squared whin rubble with buff sandstone ashlar dressings, and includes a base course and a moulded eaves course on the chancel. The nave has single lancet windows, while the chancel showcases plate tracery and a hood-moulded geometric east window. The altar, designed by Robert Lorimer around 1920, adds to the church's interior significance.
The north elevation features a buttressed four-bay nave with an entrance porch on the right, which has a pointed arch supported by colonettes and cast iron gates. To the left is a two-bay recessed chancel. The church is topped with a purple slate roof, complemented by ashlar skews and cruciform finials, and includes a corniced stack on the aisle and a copper-hooded bell on the exterior.
Inside, the church boasts an open timber roof with braced collar-beams in the chancel and arched braces in the nave. There is a semicircular nave arcade supported by cylindrical piers, and the chancel and aisle arches are exposed stone. The interior features an altar, pulpit, and organ-case adorned with timber tracery, a variety of stained glass windows, and a carved stone baptismal font.
The boundary walls consist of whin rubble on the south and west sides, while sandstone dwarf walls with cast iron railings and ashlar gatepiers define the entrance.
