Description

St Mary's Church, located on Perth Road in Dunblane, was designed by John Henderson in 1843, with later additions. This rectangular-plan, plain, gabled Gothic church is oriented east to west and features a bellcote at the eastern end. The exterior is characterized by stepped, clasping buttresses, a base course, a continuous window impost height string course, and a moulded eaves course. The gables have saw-tooth coped skews and gableted skewputts, while the pointed-arch windows have chamfered reveals and deep pitched cills.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has four bays with regular fenestration. To the outer left is a steeply pitched gabled entrance porch, flanked by diagonal clasping buttresses leading to stone steps that lead up to a pointed-arch entrance. This entrance features a double roll-moulded reveal and engaged columns with foliate capitals. A modern timber door and fanlight are present, along with a pointed-arch ventilation slit in the gablehead. Inside the porch, there is a pointed segmental-arched inner entrance within an inscribed pointed-arch, dated 1843 above, leading to a two-leaf, boarded timber door with strap hinges.

The north elevation also has four bays with regular fenestration, and there is a later addition at the northeast corner, which includes a three-light window with a harled finish and a slated piended roof. The east elevation features a stepped tripartite lancet window with a continuous cill course. The west elevation includes a single-storey, gabled chancel that abuts the center, with a stepped tripartite window at its center.

The church has leaded windows, grey slate roofing with lead flashing, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Inside, the church has a plain, whitewashed interior. There is an ashlar margin around the pointed-archway leading to the chancel, supported by engaged columns with plain capitals. Stone corbels support the exposed roof beams, and there are stone steps leading to the chancel, along with a stone pulpit and font.
