Description

Dunblane Public Library, located on High Street in Dunblane, was built in 1907. This single-storey, six-bay building has an H-plan layout and features gabled roofs. Originally an institutional building, it now serves as a library. The exterior is constructed from bull-faced yellow sandstone with ashlar margins, and the sides and rear are harled. The gables are coped and stepped.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a stone-mullioned, bipartite window flanked by single windows to the left. To the right of the central bay, there is a broad segmentally-arched entrance with a moulded reveal, keystone, and moulded cornice above. This entrance has broad two-leaf timber doors and a glazed fanlight. The outer left features a slightly advanced gabled bay with a large, mullioned and transomed, four-centred-arched window in the centre, flanked by tall, corniced windows. The gablehead is inscribed with 'CHURCH HALL'. There is also a single-storey entrance porch to the outer left, with steps leading to a broad two-leaf door and a blocked parapet. On the outer right, there is another slightly advanced gabled bay with a stone-mullioned bipartite window in the centre, a segmentally-arched panel above inscribed 'DUNBLANE INSTITUTE', and single windows flanking it. A date stone from 1907 is located at the gablehead.

The east (rear) elevation features an advanced gabled bay to the left and an advanced bay with a piended roof to the right, with a link wall in between that forms a rear service yard.

The north (side) elevation has three bays with regular fenestration and a small single-storey advanced block to the outer right. The outer left has a single bay with a piended roof that projects.

The south (side) elevation consists of five bays with regular fenestration.

The windows are stylised five-pane timber sash and case, except for the leaded glass in the left bay. The roof is covered with grey slates and lead flashing, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the library features good quality plasterwork on the ceilings and a glazed, timber-framed entrance screen leading to the lobby.
