Rowanlee, 22 Abbotsford Road, Galashiels

Rowanlee, located at 22 Abbotsford Road in Galashiels, is a plain classical house built around 1855, with later additions and alterations. It is two stories high and has three bays. The front is finished in painted ashlar, while the sides and rear are harled. The building features a base course, a dividing band between the ground and first floors, and decorative modules at the eaves cornice, with sunburst designs on the pediments.

On the north elevation facing Abbotsford Road, there is a deep-set timber panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, set within a pedimented doorpiece and accessed by steps at the center. This door is flanked by windows that are both bracketed and pedimented. The first floor has corniced and bracketed windows.

The west elevation includes a later window located above the dining-room chimneypiece on the ground floor, with a single window above it on the first floor.

The south elevation features a single-storey addition with a piend roof, dating from the later 19th century, along with adjoining structures on the ground. There is also a piend-roofed dormer in the attic.

Inside, the house boasts fine decorative schemes from different periods. The hall has a glazed timber inner door and screen, while the stone staircase is complemented by cast-iron balusters and a mahogany handrail. The public rooms showcase good decorative plasterwork, with a plain slate chimneypiece in the dining room and a white marble one in the drawing room. There is a simple range in the basement, which may have been the former kitchen.
