Description

Netherby is a mid-19th century Jacobean house designed by James Campbell Walker, located at 60 Abbotsford Road in Galashiels. The building is two stories high with upper breaking eaves and has an irregular plan. It features a five-bay principal block that connects to a three-bay former stable block via a single-storey section. The exterior is made of squared buff sandstone with ashlar dressings and is prominently situated in a large sloping garden. Architectural details include a base course, a stepped corbel-table at first-floor level, an eaves band course, and a balustraded parapet, along with mullioned and transomed windows.

The principal block is symmetrical, showcasing an advanced gabled central bay with an entrance framed by a Romanesque triple-arcade of red granite columns. Above the entrance, there is a corbelled out oriel, and to either side, there are balustraded canted three-light windows. The dormers are adorned with finialed concave pediments. An octagonal brick annexe, built around 1980, is located to the outer right, and there is an octagonal spired turret on the north elevation.

The stable block is also symmetrical, featuring an advanced central bay with a stepped corbel-table and a central gable flanked by prominent decorative stacks. The windows are predominantly plate-glass and four-pane sash and case types, and the roof is covered with purple slate, complete with corniced ridge and wall-head stacks.

Inside, many fine features remain, including elaborate plasterwork, a heavy Jacobean staircase with decorative newels and bronze lights, a late 19th-century stained glass stair window, timber and cast iron fireplaces, and parquet flooring.

Additionally, there is a simple symmetrical lodge built around 1930, which is a single-storey, three-bay structure with a pyramidal slate roof and a central chimney, made of squared buff sandstone with square projecting window-bays.

The property includes a rectangular walled garden to the west of the house, featuring curved corners and rubble walls with timber panels between upright piers. There is a brick wall to the northwest that has a lean-to greenhouse designed by Mackenzie and Moncur, along with brick sheds. A raised terrace is situated in front of the house, with rubble steps leading to the upper garden. The boundary walls to the sides and rear are made of rubble, with a low wall along Abbotsford Road, and finialed square-plan ashlar gatepiers marking the entrance.
