Description
Lucy Sanderson Cottage Homes in Galashiels is a housing complex designed by Mears and Carus-Wilson between 1930 and 1933. It features a central hall and apartments, with eight pairs of semi-detached cottages arranged around a village green. The buildings are constructed from whin and sandstone rubble, accented with buff sandstone ashlar dressings, and topped with prominent steep-pitched green Westmoreland slate roofs.
The hall is a rectangular-plan gabled structure that includes a striking octagonal ogee-roofed clock tower made of rubble. It has a bolection-moulded doorpiece with a carved panel above, full-height windows with gabled dormer-heads, and a vaulted ceiling inside. The interior also showcases murals depicting the process of woollen textile manufacture from sheep to finished cloth. To the east of the hall is the former matron's accommodation.
Adjoining the hall to the west are the Ida Hayward Cottages, which include a former sick bay designed as a two-storey house with upper breaking eaves and gabletted dormers. There is also a single-storey five-bay wing extending further west.
The Lucy Sanderson Cottages consist of eight pairs of semi-detached cottages, each with varying plans but all generally rectangular in shape. They feature a simple layout characterized by steep piended roofs and distinctive capped stacks. Throughout the complex, there are multi-pane timber sash and case windows and notable stone stacks.
