Description

Biniemyre House, located on Hayward Drive in Galashiels, was built around 1865 and has had later additions. This two-storey villa features four bays on the east side and three bays on the north side, showcasing an irregular plan and asymmetrical Baronial style with multiple gables and a circular tower. There is a single-storey wing at the rear. The exterior is constructed of squared buff sandstone ashlar, with rubble on the sides and rear, and includes a base course and a partial corbelled eaves course. The entrance is hood-moulded, and there are gabletted dormers.

On the east elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a chamfered corbelled gabled entrance bay to the right and an angled corbelled gable to the outer right. To the left, an advanced wide gable features large tripartite windows. The angle stair tower has a steeply pitched roof that is circular in plan and rises to an octagonal shape at the first floor.

The north elevation, facing the garden, includes an angled bay to the outer left and a polygonal full-height window bay to the right. The windows are made of plate glass in timber sash and case style, with four-pane timber sash and case windows on the garden and rear sides. The roofs are pitched with purple slate, featuring alternating green and purple fishscale slates on the tower. The ashlar skews have pitched skewputts and finials, and there are cast iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers.

Inside, the house boasts a good decorative scheme from various periods, including decorative plasterwork cornices and stone chimneypieces, with an inglenook on the ground floor. The timber stair features Arts and Crafts detailed pierced timber balusters and fluted timber pillars. The window surrounds and shutters are highly decorative. The billiard room is panelled to dado height and includes a decorative door surround and a turned timber truss roof.

The garden features stone steps, a boarded timber summerhouse, and whin rubble boundary walls, with later boundary walls added to Hayward Drive.
