Description

The building is a two-story Boys' Brigade Hall, constructed in 1899 with a sympathetic addition of caretaker’s rooms built in 1947-48. It was designed by James Gillespie & Scott, with the later addition by J C Cunningham, and is located on Kinnesburn Road, St Andrews.

The hall is rectangular, originally with a six-bay plan, and is constructed of polychrome brick. Architectural details include a stylised gun loop band course, cill band, and lintel band, with sandstone keystones and voussoir banding, as well as pilasters dividing the bays. Applied timber framing to the gableheads gives the building a distinctive appearance.

The north (principal) elevation features bays grouped 2/2, with linked gables centered and to the left. A bowed porch projects to the left of the center, containing a round-arched doorway with decorated voussoirs including an anchor motif and motto. Glazed, multi-pane, two-leaf doors lead into a vestibule, above which is a large round-arched window. The outer bay to the left contains small windows serving a lavatory at ground level; the right side features a secondary door flanked by windows, followed by three windows. First-floor windows are detailed to match the entrance bay. The outer bays to the right include a single-story penultimate bay with a bi-partite window and an outer bay (the Cunningham addition) with a further door. Flat-roofed bi-partite dormers are situated above. Secondary doors are fitted with two-pane fanlights.

The east elevation is four bays wide, separated by pilasters, and features a central entrance door. The south elevation has five bays with a mansard roof extending down over the central bay. Entrances are located in the outer bays, with small windows at ground level. Large, round-arched windows are situated on the first floor of the outer bays. The west elevation features buttresses with semi-circular clay caps and regular windows at ground level, with large arched windows above, mirroring the principal elevation’s design.

Decorative timber multi-pane glazing appears in the round-arched windows, with casement windows at the center flanked by smaller panes over square panes. Other windows are of a regular timber design, with plate glass at the bottom and top-hopper glazing. The roof is a graded grey slate gambrel, with multi-pane glazing to the gableheads. The rear mansard is covered in red tile hanging with roof lights. A capped ventilator is incorporated into the flashing. A flagpole stands to the right of the entrance porch.

The interior largely retains its original decorative scheme. The large drill hall features an open Queen post roof with metal beams. A later elevated platform is positioned on the west side, and a glazed-in gallery is located on the south side. The floor is timber. A war memorial from 1939-45 is housed within a wainscotted and pedimented tripartite recess with multi-paned sidelights, a dedicatory panel to the center, and further rooms located to the south and on the first floor. Doors are predominantly four-panelled timber designs, retaining their original handles.

Plain wrought iron railings enclose the site, with slender metal polygonal gate posts with decorative finials positioned to the east and south-east, both designed for vehicular access.
