Description
37, 38, 39, 40 Spylaw Street is a mid-19th century corner tenement situated on a sloping site. The building has two storeys on the south elevation with four bays and features an M-gable with scroll-shouldered apex stacks, which are connected by a balustraded parapet to the south. The east elevation rises to three storeys and has three bays. The exterior is constructed of squared coursed sandstone rubble, with raised ashlar margins around the openings.
On the south elevation, there are three timber panelled doors with plate glass fanlights at the centre, flanked by windows. The two right-hand bays at ground level have undergone later alterations, likely having been a former shop, and feature later ashlar stonework. A cill band is present at the first floor.
The east elevation is irregularly fenestrated with four bays at the ground floor, including a modern door in the second bay from the right. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with a wall head stack located between the first and second windows from the left.
The windows predominantly feature 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, with some plate glass also present in timber sash and case windows. The building has corniced stacks, decorative and plain clay cans, and ashlar coped skews, topped with grey slate.
