Description

12 Spylaw Street in Edinburgh is an early 19th-century row of single-storey cottages that were remodeled around 1900 by architects A L MacGibbon and Thomas Ross. The row includes numbers 15 and 17, which were built in 1900 by the same architects. The cottages are harled with pantiled roofs and have bracketed eaves, stepping up the hill with a break between numbers 11 and 12. Numbers 5 to 11 feature porches, while number 17, located at the end of the row, is a two-storey structure with a canted corner and corbelled first floor. This building has kingposted bargeboards on the gable and red sandstone ashlar dressings at the ground floor. Originally, there were 13 cottages with 2 and 3 bays, each having a central door flanked by windows, but now there are 9 cottages. The window and door dressings are painted ashlar, and the doors are timber panelled with either plate glass or 2-pane fanlights. Bracketed timber porches are present at numbers 5, 7, and the former number 6 (which is now a window). The porches at numbers 8, 10, and 11 are supported on log columns that extend over the pavement. Number 17 features a corniced doorway and a flat-roofed dormer facing west towards Cuddies Lane. The windows are timber sash and case, with 6-pane upper sashes and 2-pane lower sashes. The cottages have coped gable-head stacks with clay cans, ashlar-coped skews, and pantiled roofs with red ridge tiles.
