Description
This building, located at 38, 40, and 40A Prince Regent Street, along with 36 and 36A in Leith, Edinburgh, dates from the earlier 19th century. It is a symmetrical tenement that stands three stories tall with a basement and features seven bays. The exterior is made of cleaned cream droved ashlar sandstone, accented with polished dressings. It has a base course, channelled masonry at the ground level with a band course above, a cill course at the first floor, and moulded eaves. The windows are arranged in a regular pattern.
Access to the building is via steps that oversail the basement area, leading to panelled doors with rectangular fanlights located at the center and penultimate bays. The latter features deep-set fanlights, with No 40 having an umbrella fanlight, and there are blind windows above. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, with various designs. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are rendered stacks.
Additionally, the property is adorned with cast-iron railings that have spearheaded tops at the front.
