41, 43, 45, 47, 49 Madeira Street, Edinburgh

41, 43, 45, 47, 49 Madeira Street is a tenement building dating from around 1820. It is a symmetrical, three-storey structure with a basement and features nine bays. The exterior is made of cream stugged ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, and it has regular fenestration. The three central bays are slightly set forward and include a panelled tenement door with a fanlight in the middle. The inner flanking bays have deep-set doors with fanlights, with decorative features on number 43, and there are blind windows on the upper floors. The building has a base course, cill courses, a band course above the ground floor, and a cornice with a raised tablet at the centre of the blocking course.

The north elevation is constructed of squared and coursed rubble and features four blind windows on the outer area of the upper floors. The rear elevation has six bays of rubble and includes a full-height bow on the northern bay.

The windows are timber sash and case, with twelve panes, although some have been replaced with plate glass, four-pane, and tilt and swing designs. The roof is covered with grey slates and has an M-shape with twin coped ashlar apex stacks at the bridged wallhead of the end elevation, two of which have been rebuilt and rendered on the north side.

The walls and railings include a saddleback ashlar base for cast-iron arrowhead railings that continue up the ashlar steps. There are also two-meter-high rubble garden walls that divide and protect the plots.
