Description
1 and 2 Madeira Place in Edinburgh is a mid-19th century terrace of flatted dwellings, consisting of two storeys and an attic, arranged in ten bays across three distinct blocks. The ground slopes to the east. The exterior is made of droved cream sandstone ashlar, featuring a base course, a band course that separates the floors, a cornice, and a blocking course with a raised panel at the center of each block. The building has regular fenestration, with doors that include rectangular fanlights and moulded architraves.
The eastern block, which includes numbers 1 and 2, has four bays and features deep-set panelled doors in the first and third bays from the right, each with margin-glazed fanlights. There is a blind window in the right bay at the first floor, and rooflights are present.
The central block, which includes numbers 3 and 4, has three bays with doors located at the center and between the center and right bays. The central door is panelled and has a four-oval-pane fanlight above it. This block also includes a pair of modern box dormers.
The western block, number 5, also has three bays and features a deep-set door at the center, along with a pair of modern box dormers.
The windows are primarily timber plate glass sash and case, although several modern windows have been added. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are ashlar stacks, some of which are rendered, along with ashlar coped stacks and skews.
In front of the building, there are low rubble walls topped with saddleback ashlar coping, along with modern iron railings and gates. Only the western return retains the original fleur-de-lys railings.
