Description
30 North Fort Street in Leith, Edinburgh, dates from around 1840 and consists of three three-storey, four-bay tenements that adjoin a two-storey flatted terrace on a corner site with an obtuse angle. The building features stugged ashlar with ashlar dressings, a base course, and a cill course at the first floor. The fenestration is regular, with moulded architraves at the ground floor and doors that include rectangular fanlights, architraves, and cornices. There are basements present.
The North Fort Street elevation includes a two-storey and attic three-bay section with two steps leading to a deep-set door at the center, which has a five-oval-pane fanlight above it, along with a cornice and blocking course.
On the Portland Street elevation, the buildings numbered 95-105 have basements. They feature cornices above the ground floor windows and moulded architraves for the first floor windows, along with a band course above the first floor and a cornice. There are two pairs of four-bay blocks on the left, with tenement doors located in the outer bays and main doors in the penultimate inner bays. The left block (No 91) has blind windows in the left bay, while the right block (No 97) has an additional bay to the right. A slightly advanced three-bay block is situated to the right, with doors in the outer bays and a centre bay that has a curved shouldered wallhead stack. The right bay is two-storey and sweeps down from the left, featuring a blind window at the first floor.
The rear elevations are constructed of rubble. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, although some have been replaced. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are rendered stacks and ashlar coped skews.
The walls and railings consist of low coursed stone front walls topped with ashlar saddleback coping, along with decorative cast- and wrought-iron fleur-de-lys railings for the front walls, steps, and basement areas, as well as plain iron railings.
