39, 39A Portland Street, Leith, Edinburgh

39 and 39A Portland Street in Leith, Edinburgh, is a house dating from around 1840. It is a three-storey building with an attic set on a raised basement and features a three-bay façade. The exterior is made of droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, and the basement is channelled and painted. The building has a base course and a modillioned cornice, with moulded architraves and cornices at the ground level. The windows are arranged in a regular pattern.

To the right, there is a straight flight of steps leading to a Roman Doric doorpiece that is pilastered and corniced, featuring a panelled door with a rectangular fanlight above it, and a basement door below. The roof includes a pair of piend-roofed tripartite dormers.

The building has a variety of timber windows, grey slate roofing, ashlar stacks, and ashlar coped skews. There are also obtrusive cast-iron downpipes on the front elevation.

In terms of the surrounding features, there is a low ashlar coped rubble wall at the front, with smooth rock-faced rustication on the side wall and steps. The property is complemented by cast-iron railings, some of which are spearheaded.
