Description

This building, located at 4, 6, 8, and 8B St Vincent Street in Edinburgh, was designed by David Paton in 1821. It is a four-storey and basement, nine-bay terraced tenement constructed from polished ashlar sandstone. The principal floor features V-jointed rustication, with a band course at both the principal and first floors, a cill course at the first and second floors, and a continual cornice at the second floor. The third floor has a cornice and blocking course, with ashlar steps and entrance platts that overhang the basement.

The west elevation, which is the principal facade, has a round-arched doorpiece centered on the principal floor. This doorpiece includes a four-panel common stair door with a blind stone semicircular fanlight. There are also round-arched doorpieces in the third bay from the outer left and outer right, each featuring four-panel timber doors, with a radial semicircular fanlight to the left and a plate glass semicircular fanlight to the right. The remaining bays on the principal floor contain windows, while the upper floors and basement have regular fenestration. At the basement level, there is a three-bay pilastered shop front on the outer left (No 8B), which includes a panelled door with a plate glass rectangular fanlight, flanked by plate glass windows. The rest of the basement has a two-bay layout with 12-pane timber sash and case windows and glazed doors, including segmental-arched multi-pane fanlights above the doors at the center. The basement area is flagged.

The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (10-14 St Vincent Street), and the south elevation also adjoins a terrace that is listed separately (44-86 Great King Street). The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. It has a broached ashlar ridge stack, rendered ridge and gablehead stacks, and coped stacks with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with iron railings featuring fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials.
