Description

34-36 Bernard Street is an early 19th-century tenement building that stands three stories high with an attic and features six bays. It is constructed from grey sandstone with tooled ashlar and polished dressings, and the rear is made of coursed and squared rubble with cherry-caulking. The building has a base course, a band course above the ground floor, a band eaves course, a cornice, and a blocking course. Notable architectural details include raised quoins, architraved windows, and cornices at the first floor.

On the south elevation facing Bernard Street, there are four architraved and corniced doorways located in the central bays, each featuring two-leaf panelled doors and rectangular fanlights with radial astragals, which have been reinstated. The outer bays contain single windows, and there are single windows on the first and second floors above. A cast-iron post box is set into the wall on the outer right. The roof features two canted tripartite dormers with half-pined roofs.

The east elevation, facing Timberbush, is gabled and has a tall, broad corniced apex stack. It has three bays with windows in the centre and left bays, along with two small windows at the gablehead.

The north elevation at the rear has single windows and features two canted tripartite dormers in the centre, with rectangular dormers flanking them. The building has timber sash and case windows, with 12 panes on the front and sides, and some plate glass on the rear. The slate roof includes metal flashings, one apex stack, and one tall corniced transverse stack.

The interior was not seen in 1993.
