Description

Loan House, located at 10 The Loan in South Queensferry, is a former plain classical dwelling house built in the later 18th century and restored in the late 20th century by Douglas Abrahams. The building is two stories high, with a basement and attic, and features five bays. It is constructed of coursed rubble with droved ashlar on the front, polished margins, an eaves course, and long and short quoins, along with a moulded eaves cornice.

The west elevation is symmetrical with five bays and a central doorpiece that has engaged columns and a deep, plain entablature. The windows are arranged in a regular pattern, with upper lintels that are integrated with the eaves course.

The north elevation has two bays, each containing a single window on both the first and second floors, and a small window at ground level.

The east elevation features a single window in the right bay on the first and second floors, as well as a single window in the second bay from the right at ground and second floors, and a dormer window. There is a central harled extension that is two bays wide, with a blank east wall, an attic window, and a pair of small windows in the fifth bay from the right at ground level, along with a single window on the first and second floors above. Stone corbels are regularly spaced at the eaves.

The south elevation includes stairs leading down to the garden and basement, a door in the right bay, and a window above on the first floor.

The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, with modern glazing also in sash and case style. The roof is slate with straight skews and coursed rubble stacks at the gableheads.

Inside, the building has a late 20th century office fit-out. The boundary walls and railings consist of rubble gate posts with stone domed caps, stone walls, and railings.
