Description

The Tolbooth, located on High Street in South Queensferry, is a significant building dating back to the 17th century, with a steeple added in 1720, a belfry and spire completed in 1807, and a clock installed in 1887. The main block of the building is two stories high, featuring square and snecked rubble at the rear and a harled front with ashlar dressings. The steeple is four stages high with a spire, constructed from sandstone ashlar at the ground level and harled in the upper stages, adorned with ashlar dressings and a string course at the first, second, and third stages, along with a projecting cornice at the eaves.

On the northeast elevation, there is a modern shop door and window to the right of the steeple, with a bipartite window above it and a dormer window featuring an arched pediment in the attic. The east elevation adjoins the Rosebery Memorial Hall, while the south elevation has two first-floor windows. The building features small pane sash and case windows, a slate roof with a crowstepped west skew, an ashlar stack at the west gablehead, and a tall central stack at the rear.

The steeple has four faces, with the Queensferry Arms displayed on the first stage and a war memorial below it. The second and third stages have small windows that are square in proportion on the west, north, and east faces, while all faces of the fourth stage feature an arched window, which is blocked on the south side. A projecting Jubilee Clock is present on all four faces of the octagonal steeple. There is a pend running through the tower from west to east, stairs leading to the High Street, and a well that is dated 1817.

The interior of the building has been greatly altered over time.
