Description

The Stags Head Hotel, located at 8 High Street in South Queensferry, dates back to 1712 and has undergone significant alterations since its original construction. This two-storey, L-plan building was formerly a house and is now a hotel. The principal elevation features painted harl with painted margins, while the rear displays exposed harl with smooth margins, a painted base course, and a raised cill band. A fascia entablature runs across the first-floor addition of the hotel, supported by four fluted pilasters.

On the south elevation, the ground floor has a four-bay projecting hotel front. The principal door, which is pedimented, is located in the left bay, with a central panelled door that has a geometric fanlight, flanked by tripartite windows. The first-floor bays do not align with those on the ground floor.

The west elevation shows irregular fenestration with chamfered corners, which are more pronounced on the left side. The rear extension is four storeys high and consists of two bays.

The north elevation also features a four-storey rear extension. It has a blocked single window at ground level in the right bay, with a single window above on the first floor, and additional single windows in the centre on the second and third floors.

The east elevation includes a function room extension at the first floor, with fire stairs leading to the car park. The ground floor is made of exposed rubble and has blocked openings from an earlier three-bay building. A central door, with a lintel dated 1712, is flanked by windows that have smooth margins and relieving arches.

The first-floor windows on the principal elevation are four-pane timber sash and case, while modern glazing is present at the rear. The rest of the windows are predominantly sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring straight stone skews and rendered gablehead stacks.

The interior was not seen in 2000.
