Description
4 Sutherland Street in Helensburgh is a later 19th-century single-storey and attic villa, featuring a symmetrical three-bay design with ornate cast-iron columns. The building is constructed from squared, stugged, and snecked cream sandstone, with ashlar dressings. It has a base course, timber mullions on the canted windows, stop-chamfered arrises, and a bracketed cornice.
On the west elevation facing Sutherland Street, there is a segmental-arch doorpiece at the center with moulded reveals, two-leaf panelled doors, and a fanlight above. Canted windows flank the entrance, with eaves that sweep down to form a porch supported by decorated columns with foliate flanged brackets. The center features a small semi-circular headed dormer, flanked by larger slate-hung dormers with bracketed eaves and gablets.
The south elevation is gabled and has a modern flat-roofed garage attached. The north elevation is also gabled and has a modern window added to the outer left, along with unfortunate modern replacement windows. The roof is covered in grey slate, with corniced ashlar stacks at the gables, many of which retain their original cans.
