Description

The Primary School on Dundee Road in Glamis dates from around 1840 and was extended in 1870. It is a single-storey building featuring Tudor architectural details, and it is constructed from squared rubble with dressed ashlar margins and quoins, along with a base course.

On the southwest elevation, there is a broad recessed bay at the center, flanked by a bipartite window to the left and a prominent shouldered stack in a catslide roof to the right. To the outer right, an advanced gable contains a central bipartite window and a boarded timber door to the left, with a blind oculus in the gablehead. The outer left features another gabled bay with a small window, and a further window on the return to the right of the lower gable, which projects to the left of center. There is also a window to the right and a cast-iron bell with a bracket to the right in the gablehead.

The northwest elevation presents a four-bay arrangement, with the schoolhouse projecting to the outer left. This side has three regularly spaced windows and a lower recessed bay to the outer right, which includes a boarded timber door and a letterbox fanlight.

On the southeast elevation, an advanced gable at the center features a double bipartite window and a louvered roundel in the gablehead. There are two bipartite windows on the return to the right and another bipartite window in a recessed bay beyond to the right, with the schoolhouse adjoining to the outer right. To the left, there is a bipartite window with an adjacent window beyond in the same bay.

The windows throughout the building have a 12- and 16-pane glazing pattern, with some lying panes, and are made of timber in a sash and case style. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks featuring a battered string course and polygonal cans. The ashlar-coped sawtooth skews have moulded block skewputts, and small cast-iron ridge ventilators are present.

Additionally, there is a playshed constructed from rubble with a piended and slated roof, supported by cast-iron columns.
