Description
8 Castle Street in Banff is a building dating from around 1770. It has three storeys and a five-bay regular street frontage, with a return gable facing Castle Lane and a three-storey and attic rear wing. The exterior is harled with ashlar margins, a harled gable, and a rubble rear.
The building features a wide segmental-headed keystoned pend arch in the southern outer bay, which is closed with plank doors and has blocked imposts. There is a shallow pilastered and corniced entrance in the second bay, along with three ground floor windows. The first and second floors have regular fenestration with timber sash and case windows; the longer first-floor windows mainly have 12-pane glazing, while there is a blind window on the second floor, which mainly has 9-pane glazing.
The building has corniced end and ridge stacks, and the roofs are covered with corrugated asbestos. Access to the central court is through the pend.
Inside, there is a room in the rear wing that features an early 19th-century simple plaster cornice, along with beaded panelled doors and window shutters. The staircase has simple wooden balusters and a decorative 19th-century coloured glass inset in the window. Additionally, there is a substantial barrel-vaulted cellar.
