Description
14 Old Castlegate in Banff is a mid-18th century house that faces an earlier range. The front block, dated 1759, is two stories high with an attic and features a three-bay street frontage. It is harled with painted ashlar margins and has a central entrance flanked by windows with 12-pane glazing. The first floor has regular fenestration with 12-pane lying-pane glazing. There are late 19th century canted wallhead dormers in the outer bays, which include plate glass and 4-pane glazing. All windows are timber sash and case. The building has flat skews with moulded run-off skewputts and moulded copes on the end stacks, topped by a slate roof.
The rear block is a much-altered single-storey dwelling from the early 18th century, which has a raised basement and is linked to the later front block. It is constructed of harled rubble with some painted ashlar margins. There is a basement doorway in the north gable and a first-floor window in the same gable. The east frontage is obscured by substantial modern bay windows with piended roofs, featuring mullioned and transomed lights, including a four-light window to the right and a three-light window above a single basement window to the left.
Additionally, there is a single early 18th century apex chimney stack at the north gable, and the building has a slate roof. The rear garden is enclosed by rubble walls.
