Description
77-79 King Street and 4-8 West North Street is an early 19th century, three-storey and attic Classical tenement block located on a corner site. The building features ten bays facing King Street and four bays along West North Street, with a rounded corner that includes a four-panel timber entrance door topped by a semicircular fanlight. The exterior is constructed of grey granite ashlar, with coursed rubble at the rear. The ground floor has round-arched openings, and there is a band course between the ground and first storeys. The attic dormers at Nos 83-97 are piended, and No 97 includes a public house with a central entrance door flanked by square-headed openings featuring small pane glazing set within astragals, topped by a consoled timber fascia.
The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with curved glazing at the corner bay. It has broad ridge stacks and a grey slate roof. The ground floor windows at Nos 77 and 79 display a multi-pane glazing pattern, although some non-traditional windows are present at ground level.
The interior has been largely modernised, with shops on the ground floor and flats above, a change that occurred in 2006.
