Description

14-20 Keir Street is a four-storey plain classical corner tenement block built around 1821. The building features three bays on the west elevation and seven on the north elevation. It is constructed of polished ashlar, which is channelled to the ground on the west side, with coursed rubble at the basement and random rubble at the rear. There are dividing bands between the basement and ground floors, as well as between the ground and first floors, and a narrow eaves course. The building has stone steps and platts that overarch the basement areas.

On the west elevation, there is a timber panelled door with a sunburst fanlight set in a recessed round-arched surround, located between the first and second bays from the right. The elevation is regularly fenestrated.

The north elevation has blind windows in two bays to the right. There is a timber panelled door to the stair in a moulded surround in the third bay from the right, with windows above that light the stair. In the third bay from the left, there is another timber panelled door with a small-pane glazed fanlight in a corniced, pilastered surround. This elevation is also regularly fenestrated.

The windows throughout the building feature 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are stone skews and corniced stacks with circular cans at the ridge and splayed at the north wallhead.

The boundary wall and railings consist of spear-headed cast-iron railings atop a low ashlar boundary wall, extending to the steps and platts, with pine cone finials on the basement gates.
