Edinburgh Art College Annexe, The Vennel, Grassmarket, Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Art College Annexe, located on The Vennel in Grassmarket, Edinburgh, is a former church designed by Archibald Scott in 1828. This two-storey building features a piend roof and has a basement to the north and west. It is a plain classical structure with five bays, an arcaded porch on the east side, and is constructed from coursed sandstone on the east elevation, with random rubble on the sides and rear, and droved ashlar dressings. The building has a blocking course and long and short quoins. The south elevation is adjacent to the former Salvation Army Women's Refuge.

The east elevation has five bays, with a flat-roofed single-storey porch that is now blocked. This porch features a tripartite ashlar Doric arcade flanked by single windowed bays and has a raised blocking course. The west elevation has four bays with tall round-headed windows in the two inner bays. The windows predominantly have 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are two corniced chimney stalks with small circular cans located behind the eastern blocking course.

The interior was converted in 1999 to serve as studios for the Edinburgh College of Art, although it was not seen in 2000. The property also features a boundary wall with cast-iron railings on an ashlar-coped random rubble wall. There are stone steps to the south from The Vennel, flanked by ashlar-coped coursed sandstone walls leading to a round-arched ashlar gateway with cast-iron gates.
