Description

9 Grassmarket in Edinburgh is a three-storey and attic tenement building designed by George Beattie and Son in 1874, featuring Scots Baronial details. The building has four bays facing Grassmarket, with a canted corner bay that houses a public house on the ground floor, and three bays on West Port. It is constructed from squared and snecked stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings. The first-floor windows have bracketed cornices, while the corner bay features bipartite windows on the first and second floors. Below the attic cills, there is a corbel course with chequer-set machicolations. The attic has crowstepped gabled dormerheads, with a single window in the canted bay and a two-window arrangement (with a circular panel in the gable) facing Grassmarket and West Port. The flanking windows also have gabletted dormerheads. The public house entrance includes a two-leaf timber panelled storm door, leading to a two-leaf glazed inner door with stained leaded glass, a fanlight, and brass door furniture.

Inside, the building features a well-preserved interior with a bow-ended timber bar and a corniced timber gantry supported by Corinthian columns that frame shelved niches and a clock in a timber frame. There are etched glass partitions and a decorative plaster cornice on the ceiling. The windows have 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, although the public house has modern small-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are rendered apex and ridge stacks with circular cans.
