Description
This terrace comprises four two-story, two-bay houses located on the east side of Thomas Street in Warrenpoint. The terrace was constructed between 1840 and 1859 and is not present on the 1834 town map, appearing instead on the 1861 map. Each house measures approximately 4.75 yards by 8.5 yards and was originally two-and-a-half storeys high, according to the 1863 Valuation Book, and is undoubtedly the building standing today.
The houses share a common pitched roof, now with various coverings and advanced eaves courses. Modern box dormers have been added to the roof. The external walls are rendered, with some areas dashed and others smooth, all painted. Each house has a front door located on the right-hand side at ground floor level, with a single window to the left (most of which have been enlarged). There are two windows on the first floor. The windows and doors are all modern. The left gable abuts the former technical school (HB16/11/039). The right gable is rendered and painted. Rear elevations have not been inspected.
Original HMBB survey slides from around 1969 showed the terrace in a more original state, with the exception of number 14. They depict pitched natural slate roofs, raised eaves courses supporting cast iron rainwater goods, and a moulded hopper on the downpipe to number 16. The walls were originally lined, rendered, and painted. Each house originally had a door on the right-hand side with a single window to its left. Two similar windows were aligned above at the first floor. Most houses retained their original doors, which were t&g sheeted with a lozenge-glazed transom above. The original windows were 6/6 sliding sashes, although only numbers 16 and 20 retain this feature; the others have a mixture of 1/1 sashes and modern top-hung casements, all with deep cills.
Number 14 has undergone significant alteration, including a large box dormer to the front roof pitch, pebble-dashed walls, and modern windows and doors in altered openings.
