Description

The building at 13 Church Street, Warrenpoint, is a two-storey building divided into two shop units, originally one larger shop, and set within a terrace on the north side of Church Street. Construction likely occurred between 1820 and 1839. The roof is pitched and covered with natural slate, featuring a concrete right skew and an advanced eaves course with half-round metal rainwater goods. The front elevation is lined, rendered, and painted with a simple cill course separating the ground and first floors. Each unit has a single window on the first floor, while the ground floors are occupied by modern shop fronts of no architectural or historical interest. The first-floor windows are modern, large, top-hung casement windows. The left and right gables are abutted by adjacent buildings.

The building appears on the 1834 Valuation town plan and was described in the 1835 Valuation as measuring 25 feet by 27 feet 6 inches by 19 feet. Similar dimensions are recorded in the 1863 Valuation book. The valuation remained constant until 1875, when it increased to £19 due to the addition of a new back wing. Further increases to £24 in 1877 suggest a significant refurbishment. A 1969 Historic Monuments and Buildings Board (HMBB) survey card dated December 12, 1969, described the building as having lined rendered walls above, a slated roof, plain pilasters rising to a fascia board, and a moulded circular advertising sign between the first and second-floor windows. The HMBB slide from 1969 depicts this advertising sign, illustrating a pair of hands cupped around a lightning bolt, with the words "ELECTRICITY" above and "IN SAFE HANDS" below. The shop fascia originally read “Electrical McClorey & Sherry Contractors”. The rear elevation has not been inspected. The building retains no features of architectural or historical interest.
