Description

This rectangular public hall, built between 1880 and 1899, is situated to the rear of the town hall in Warrenpoint, County Down. It was erected by Warrenpoint Town Commissioners in 1887, designed by W.J. Watson, and cost £800 to build. The hall has a pitched roof, with its front (south-west) gable abutting the town hall. The south-east elevation features a fire door and three modern, rectangular window openings containing new timber casements, separated by rendered buttresses. A modern fuel tank abuts this elevation. The north-west elevation leads into a new structure that was, at the time of survey, under construction. The rear (north-east) gable is abutted by a modern, two-storey cement-rendered fly-tower (over the stage) with dressing rooms to the rear, all under a lean-to felt roof. These modern additions, characterized by cement-rendered walls, modern timber doors, and windows, are not considered to be of significant interest. The hall hosted the showing of the first moving picture in the town in 1911. The interior is noted for the quality and survival of its features, although alterations have detracted from the building. The building’s architectural form is rectangular, and its structural system is characterized as H-. The hall holds local historical significance.
