Description

All that remains of the former Shambles, is an oval ashlar sandstone plaque now reset into a modern pebble dashed surround at corner of Keys Lane and East Street. The latter comprises a smooth rendered panel with granite block trim. Plaque reads: ‘MEAT MARKET/ AND/ SHAMBLES/ RH/ 1834’. Below, a modern bronze plaque states ‘THIS STONE MARKING THE FORMER SITE/ OF THE SHAMBLES (SLAUGHTERHOUSE)/ AND MEAT MARKET/ WAS ERECTED BY/ NEWRY AND MOURNE DISTRICT COUNCIL/ ON BEHALF OF/ WARRENPOINT HISTORICAL GROUP/ J. McCART CHAIRMAN JUNE 1984’.
