Description

54 and 55 Market Place, also known as The Shambles, are two shops located on a corner site in Chippenham, dating from the mid-19th century. They are built of limestone ashlar with a concrete tile roof that continues with No. 71 to the right. The roof features wide eaves and moulded ridge stacks at the party walls. The building has a one-unit plan that extends over a passage to the left on the first floor.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a two-window range. The facade of No. 54, which faces north, includes 6/6-pane sash windows and platbands between the floors. On the right side of the ground floor, there is a semicircular arch with chamfered rusticated voussoirs and a keystone, leading to a passage towards the Yelde Hall. To the left, there is a six-panel door with an overlight, sheltered by a hood on console brackets. In the center, a rectangular projecting shop window features two plate-glass panes, colonnettes, a fascia with a moulded cornice, and a sill. Above the glazing, there are fretted cast-iron panels, and the word "PURVEYORS" is incised into the plinth. The left return of No. 54 has one blind window on each upper floor and a single-pane shop window similar to the front, but without the pierced panels and supported by three plain fretted brackets.

No. 55, which faces north-east and is of similar design, has a one-window range and angles forward from No. 54 to meet the east side of The Shambles. It features a 6/6-pane sash window on the second floor, a 19th-century plate-glass sash on the first floor, and a 20th-century shop front on the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected.
