Description

These two shops, located at 56 and 57 Market Place in Chippenham, were likely built in the mid to late 19th century. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with a half-hipped slate roof and a moulded ashlar stack on the left side. The building has a double-depth plan and originally featured a 4-window facade over three storeys with an attic. There are four gabled dormers with sash windows in the attic. The upper floors have paired sash windows set within raised, eared and shouldered architraves. A stone console eaves cornice runs along the top of the building, and platbands are positioned above the lintels of the windows. The shop fronts have been replaced in the 20th century. The interior has not been inspected. The facade is considered to make a significant contribution to the character of a group of listed buildings in the center of Chippenham.
