Description
69 and 70 Market Place is a mid-19th century shop located in Chippenham. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar, with an unseen roof that is likely slate, and features tall moulded ashlar stacks on either side. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high with a two-window range.
The front has a prominent gable that is coped and stepped at the apex, topped with a ball finial. This gable is flanked by pilasters that extend higher than the walls, each adorned with a raised diamond-shaped panel beneath a curved top. On the second floor, there is a large Diocletian window with a moulded architrave and a bracketed sill, alongside an 8/8-pane sash window in the centre. The second floor also features moulded architraves above additional 8/8-pane sash windows, which are positioned over a 20th-century shop front. The interior has not been inspected.
