Description
The Old Bakehouse, located to the rear of Number 3, is a warehouse or cloth factory building from the early 19th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble with dressed quoins and features a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan and stands three storeys tall. The south front has four windows, with the left-hand (west) range being taller and topped with a hipped roof. The windows are recessed horned sash types, surrounded by plain square-cut ashlar, with six-over-six panes, except for the upper floor which has three-over-six panes. A flight of mid-20th century timber steps leads up to a half-glazed door at first-floor level. There are wide ground-floor doorways, with the main entrance featuring a chamfered surround, a panelled door, and a mid-20th century canopy. The interior has not been inspected. This building, constructed after the survey for the 1820 map, serves as a reminder of the significance of cloth manufacture to Chippenham’s historical economy, alongside the former mill building in Emery Lane.
