Description
Nos 12 and 13 on The Shambles are buildings from the late 18th century or early 19th century, possibly with a timber-framed core. The southern facade is made of red brick with English band brickwork and is partly built above an arch that spans a small unnamed street. There is a substantial timber lintel over the arch and over the recessed door to No 12, which rests on a curved stone corbel. The upper storey jetties out, and the building has three storeys with two windows and an additional window in the centre of the first floor. The windows are sashes with boxed frames and glazing bars. The western ground floor retains remnants of a 19th-century shop front, featuring outer panelled pilasters, double consoles, a frieze, and a cornice, although these are now covered with hardboard. The shop door has been blocked, and there is a plank door leading to No 12. The rear facade is rendered above the lintel and has one small window. The interior of the upper floors is largely inaccessible, but there is an exposed rear wall plate, including a bressumer over the arch.
