Description
No. 13 Low Pavement is a late Elizabethan house with a plastered facade and timber frame. It stands three storeys high with a gabled attic, and each floor jetties out. The first floor is supported by Doric pillars that create an arcade along the pavement below, featuring a panelled wooden ceiling. There are two 19th-century canted oriel bay windows with unbarred sashes. The upper floors display a central original pilaster on the facade, and the gables are adorned with ornamental 19th-century barge boards. The shop front includes panelled pilasters and a central door, with windows that have moulded frames and a central vertical glazing bar remaining. The interior has tiled flooring, and the first-floor rooms feature a moulded plaster cornice.
At the rear, there is a range of buildings in Falcon Yard. The northern part is constructed of early 18th-century red brick, with the ground floor painted. Brick string courses are present at the second-floor sill and remnants can be seen at the first-floor sill. The southern gable end is coped and has a bricked-up attic window, while the building generally has three storeys. It features five irregularly placed windows, which are sashes, with the top floor having boxed frames and glazing bars. The door has a plain fanlight. No. 13 was formerly known as the Falcon Inn, which is said to have been one of Chesterfield's coaching inns.
