Description
This building is a row of eight shops, now consisting of six shops and two offices, located at 2-16 The Shambles in Malton. It dates from the early to mid-19th century and has undergone later alterations. The structure features painted brick on a painted stone plinth, with an overhanging pent roof made of slate supported by shaped brackets. The roof is hipped and curved at the right end, while the left end has been altered. There are four brick stacks.
Each shop is a single bay within a one-storey, eight-bay range. A round-arched passage doorway is located between Nos 10 and 12, featuring a round-headed plank and batten door in a raised surround. The shop fronts typically have a door to the left of a shop window, which sits over a brick riser. Most original doors, which were plank and batten, have been retained, except for those at Nos 6 and 16. The original windows had 15 square panes and were set back to accommodate shutters, as seen in Nos 2, 6, 8, 12, and 14. A continuous louvred ventilation grille runs across the tops of the windows and doors; while most have been boarded over, open ones can still be found in Nos 2, 8, 10, and 12. The shop front of No. 2 returns at the right end onto Market Place, featuring a 20th-century cross window beneath the louvred ventilation grille. The overhanging roof creates a continuous canopy over the shop fronts.
Inside, each shop originally had a small plain fireplace with a shelf against the rear wall. Together with Nos 1-15 and 2-16 The Shambles, this row represents an interesting example of a planned thoroughfare designed to connect the Market Place with the newly opened Cattle Market. The shops are believed to have originally been butchers' shops.
