Description
23 Market Place is a house that has been converted into two shops. It dates from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the early and later 19th century. The building features painted brick on a painted plinth, a flat timber eaves band, and a modillion cornice. The left gable is coped with a shaped kneeler, and there are brick end stacks on a pantile roof. The structure is two stories tall with an attic and has a four-window front.
The central entrance consists of a four-panel door with an overlight, which is sheltered by a bracketed flat hood and a painted wedge lintel. On the left side, there is a double shop front that includes a half-glazed door and overlight positioned between bow windows with fluted sills, topped by a plain fascia and a moulded cornice. On the right side, the single shop front features plain pilasters with imposts, a plain fascia, and a moulded cornice, containing a glazed and panelled door with an overlight and a plate glass window. The first-floor windows are four-pane sashes with painted stone sills and painted wedge lintels. In the attic, there are two flat dormers with two-light large pane casement windows.
